Picture: Lotus ready for Winter
Getting Pond Plants ready for Winter is a straight forward affair when keeping a few rules in mind:
    • Floating Tropical Plants (Hyacinths and Water Lettuce) are best discarded in all but the most southern areas
    • Most Lotus sold in the U.S. are of the Nelumbo variety and hardy. Lower it into the Pond so the growing tip is protected from freezing.
    • Tropical Water Lilies should be taken out of the Pond in areas in which the water temperature will sink below 60 degrees (more detailed instructions for tropical Water Lilies in a future newsletter)
    • Hardy Water Lilies should be moved to deeper water to prevent the growing tip from being touched by frost
    • Hardy Marginal Pond Plants can stay in the Pond, but should also be moved deep enough to avoid freezing
    • Tropical Marginal Pond Plants should be moved inside to a spot with indirect but sufficient light and kept very moist.

Many more tips for winterizing the Pond can be found in our FREE Brochure "Winterizing the Pond", which can be downloaded HERE (along with many others).

Important (Pond) Tip (TM)

Koi are extremely sensitive to sudden water temperature changes!
A Pond can stratify in winter: warmer water in the top layers that are being warmed by the sun and colder water in the dark bottom of the Pond. The Pond can suddenly "flip" - the layers of water switch. This often results in the death of the Koi in the Pond, for which the Pond owner cannot see an obvious reason.
A good way to avoid this unfortunate situation is to use a Pond Air Pump during winter. The Air Pump will not only supply the Pond Fish with much needed oxygen, but will also gently circulate the water and help to prevent stratification.
