Common Winter Pond Problems and what to do about it:
>> Predation: Your Pond Fish are easy breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for Predators now that Pond Plants have died down and don't provide hiding spots. Easy Solutions: Decoys, Netting & Deterrents
>>Stratification: When the sun finally comes out and heats the Pond Water, the top will heat faster than the bottom and this can result in "flipping" of the Pond. If this happens, Koi in particular are extremely sensitive to sudden temperature changes and will die in minutes (it has happened to this editor who thought she knew everything about ponds). Easy Solution: Keep your Pond Pump running. But who wants to stick their hands into cold water to clean it? Prevent that by sticking it in a Pump Bag.
>>Fat Emulsification: Koi in particular are susceptible to this condition. The fat reserves that they have stored up get too cold and get hard inside their bodies. All of a sudden you will find them swimming in all sorts of strange positions. Easy Solution: Give them a safe heat source by adding some submersible Pond Lights. You will find your Pond Fish swimming around this subtle heat source.
>>Lack of Oxygen: This is the #1 Pond Fish Killer! Make sure you keep a hole in the ice - if you made it through this cold snap with your Fish still alive and do not have a Pond Heater, then better get one now before the next one hits (its only January). Without adequate oxygen or a way for carbon deoxide to escape it is only a matter of time before the Pond Fish will succumb to this killer! Large Koi in particular need large amounts of oxygen. A dependable Air Pump is definitely needed for them in all but the warmest areas (and there they are needed in the Summer). -- an added benefit of Air Pumps is that the added oxygen helps to keep the water clear in the summer and also help to avoid stratefication-- |

Fun (Pond) Fact (TM)
Pond Fish DO occasionally eat in the Winter.
If the Pond Water temporarily warms up a bit they munch of whatever algae they can find on rocks and liner. This is easy to digest and does not harm them (have you noticed that last years baby fish are a bit bigger in the spring?).
