Timely Tips for this time of year...Is your Pond "natural"?...Fun (Pond) Fact

A PondMarket "Wet Foot Print" column:
What makes a Garden Pond natural? Afterall, it has a rubber lining to start with - hardly something that occurs in nature!
There are ways, however, to maximize the "natural" element of the ecological sphere we created.
We all use water treatments to keep the habitat in balance and good looking. Today we have choices! We can use "all natural" products for most applications. This option was not available just a couple of years ago and there are a couple of things where we still need to use chemical elements. De-Chlorinator is one of those. But most Water Treatments needed for the Pond are now available in "all natural" format. |

Timely Tip: This is the time of year when gooey, bubbly, hairy or other types of growth start on our waterfalls, rocks and liners. The first order of business is measuring the pH -- this type of Algae LOVES high pH. We want our pH in the 6.8 - 7.8 range to keep growth of this stuff down to a minimum. Next order of business is a Beneficial Bacteria product that works in cooler water temperatures (and is "all natural" in keeping with our theme this week) to reduce available nutrients for this annoying stuff. These small changes will have a minimum of impact on cold weather stressed fish and yet let us get a head start on moving the Pond toward Spring. |

Fun (Pond) Fact (TM)
You will start seeing new green shoots emerge on some Pond Plants even when it is still very cold outside because some Plants start the Spring according to daylight hours and not temperature.
