Algae is a Plant, you
Pond is a Green House! It loves it
there!
In the Pond everything is produced that this
plant needs to thrive: Nutrients (fish poopoo), Water,
Light.
The trick is to take some of this away
to
make the conditions for this particular plant less than
ideal.
This week we explain
how:
The water can obviously not be taken
away.... that leaves nutrients and light.
Let's start
with nutrients! Your Pond Fish will produce waste, but
we can make sure that waste is consumed by something
other than the Algae. Here is where Benefical
Bacteria does the job. These bacteria have been bred
for the purpose of eating the nutrients out of fish
waste and thus taking it away from the algae. There must
always be a plentyful supply of these in the Pond.

Beneficial
Bacteria have to be replenished regularly
(they also help to keep the Pond water healthy for your
fish by cleaning it up), and - this is very important -
the conditions in the Pond need to be right for the
bacteria to multiply. The Pond water needs to have a pH
in the range of 7.0 - 8.0. This can easily be tested
and adjusted
up or down. Sometimes a flocculant needs
to be used to help clean up and clean out the murky
water.
If taking the nutrients out of the Pond water
is not enough to keep the water clear (as is sometimes
the case in Fish Ponds with large populations of fish or
in Koi Ponds with large Koi, a UV
Light is the definite fix and cure-all for the
problem.
UV Lights for Ponds are available as Filter/UV
Light combinations or as UV
Stand Alone units that can be added to existing
systems. |

Fun (Pond) Fact (TM)
Baby Pond Fish, right after they hatch
from the egg, are barely larger than the head of a pin.
They can be seen in very clear and still pond water, but
one has to get very close to the water and be very
still. They look similar to mosquito larvae, but without
the jerky movements.
