Jumping pH

Does you pH have A.D.D. ? ... tired of cleaning Pumps ? ... Fun (Pond) Fact

Image: Jumping pH We have all learned (usually the hard way) how important pH is to having a healthy, beautiful pond. But what if...the pH keeps bouncing around like it is afflicted with A.D.D.?
Often this is due to the KH of the pond water being too low. KH is the relative hardness of the water. Ideally, the KH should be around 80, for Koi ponds as much as 120 is recommended. Anything below 80 will eventually hamper not only pH values but also the beneficial bacteria.
How do you know your KH? It can be measured!
Like all adjustments to pond water, KH and pH should be adjusted slowly and according to manufacturer's directions to avoid stressing (or even killing) the pond fish.
Motto: Do it right in the Spring and the Pond is easy as pie all season!

We all get tired of cleaning Pond Pumps! The best way to avoid that chore as much as possible is to install a Skimmer. It protects the Pond Pump from all the "gook" and debris it will otherwise likely suck up. The skimmer will still let the pump suck it out of the pond, but it will be caught by the skimmer before it reaches the pump. Skimmers have the additional advantage of eliminating leaves and stuff BEFORE it falls to the pond bottom and turns to sludge.
As an alternative that works quite well, if not as efficiently, is a pump bag. Lastly, when replacing a pump that will not/cannot sit inside a skimmer it is best to select a "debris handling" or "clog resistant" Pump to minimize pump cleaning.
The ratings for reducing pump cleaning is:
Skimmer - Best
Pump Bag - Good
Clog Resistant Pump - Good
Unprotected Pump - Clean often, sometimes daily.

  Fun (Pond) Fact (TM)

Goldfish and Koi can be observed to develop "tubercles" around their head and in front of the pectoral fin when they are ready to breed.
The "tubercles" look confusingly like "Ick"
(like small grains of sugar).
How to tell the difference?
Usually, if it is is confined to the head and only IN FRONT OF the pectoral fin it is not Ick.
