As the days get shorter...Fun (Pond) Fact
|
|

|
Whether you live north or south...the days are getting shorter, signaling some changes in the Pond:
Plants will start to decline, even some in southern Ponds (those that cycle by daylight hours). Dying leaves will add more organic matter to the Pond bottom -
Beneficial Bacteria
is needed to help prevent an increase in the dreaded Sludge.
Water Temperatures will start to decline this coming month everywhere but in the deep south. Pond Fish will need
low protein, plant based Pond Fish Food
to prevent impaction because their digestive tract will slow significantly with lower Water Temperatures.
Plants surrounding the Pond will start to lose leaves and the Pond may need to be covered with
Pond Netting
to prevent all those leaves from blowing into it creating undue stress for the Pond Fish during the winter months and too much work for the Pond Owner during start-up in the spring.
This is also a good time to observe your Pond Fish closely while they feed to make sure they go into winter healthy.
Pond Medications
work much better in warmer water temperatures and are best administered now than later.

Fun (Pond) Fact
(TM)
Pond Fish, like reptiles, are "cold blooded" creatures.
This means that they do not regulate their own body temperature, but are depended on their environment to warm or cool them.
