In this edition we will address the different needs of Ponds in the North and Ponds in the South this time of year:
Ponds in the South ... It is a good time to re-pot and divide Pond Plants! A little
Pond safe fertilizer
will ensure quick growth of new roots and a renewed plant for the next season.
Southern Ponds (except in the mountains - where directions for Northern Ponds as described below should be used) will still be using regular season
Pond Fish Food
for several more weeks at least.
Fall/Winter Beneficial Bacteria
is a good idea even in "the South" now, because it is made to work in darker (as well as colder) water and even here the days are getting shorter. Since the rainy season is about to end, Ponds will have to be topped off more often. Don't forget to use
De-Chlorinator unless well water is used. Even small amounts of chlorine are harmful over time and are the cause of a lot of Pond Fish deaths when seemingly "nothing is wrong" with the Pond Fish. Chlorine slowly destroys the gills.
Ponds in the North ... Here it is getting to be necessary to start some serious fall preparations! Just a little more diligence now will make Spring Start-Up infinitely easier!
Even in the north it is a good time to
re-pot and divide Pond Plants
. The cooler, but not yet frigid, temperatures give the Pond Plants time to develop a good root system for the next season. A good and
safe aquatic fertilizer
helps this process along.
It is time to switch to
Fall/Winter Pond Fish Food
. We keep harping on the dimished ability of the Pond Fish to digest certain elements of their food when the Pond Water gets cooler/colder. It is important that the Pond Fish go into winter in the best possible shape to avoid deaths from stress, parasites and disease.
Check the pH
of the Pond Water and then add
Pond Salt
to help keep parasites in check.
Start using
Fall/Winter Beneficial Bacteria
which works better in colder, darker Ponds and helps to reduce the need for a drain of the Pond in the Spring.
Last but not least: Get ready to
cover the Pond
cover the Pond once the trees start loosing their leaves. |

Koi do have teeth ...
but they are way back in their throat
where no human finger can get to them
and they cannot harm anyone.
