4 Stars Cal Waterfall Spillways Flow rate is OVERRATED.
by John Bell from Los Angeles, CA USA on Nov 2, 2008
I’ve had a Cal Waterfall Spillway (SPW14) for almost a year now. I really enjoy watching the waterfall from this and I do believe it has increased the water quality of my small pond, however the maxim flow rate is OVERRATED. I first used a PW2500 Cal Pump Waterfall Pump and although it was spectacular, it started to overflow in less than an 1/2 hour. I realized that the Spillway filter pad had clogged up probably because of the increased water flow picking up excess crap from my main filter. After thoroughly cleaning my filter and pond it worked great for 3 days and the filter pad clogged up again. Only this time I was away and it almost empted my pond and flooded my yard.  I bought an 1800 gph pump and that worked for a couple of weeks then clogged up again. I finally replaced the Spillway filter pad with a Very Coarse Matala Filter Media (HSBK) and it has been running great ever since. I haven’t tried it yet, so I do not know if the PW2500 pump will work, but I’m happy with the SPW14 run off the 1800 gph pump.
