|| Which Plants in and which Plants out?

This time of year we receive many, many emails asking which plants will survive in the pond during the winter and which plants will have to be brought into the house (or other warm shelter). There are many variables, of course, including the climate zone in which the pond is located. Here are some common Marginal Aquatic Plants, though and where they should spend the winter in areas where the water temperature will go below 40 degrees:

Tropical Plants:

Water Canna Water Poppy Taro Umbrella Palm Papyrus

These plants must be brought inside and overwintered in a warm spot. They will probably loose some leaves, but generally pop right back up in the spring pond.

Hardy Plants:

Arrowhead Cattail Lizard Tail Pickerel Rush Floating Heart

Move these plants deep enough into the pond that the crown of the plant will not freeze and they will winter just fine.

==>>>Remember, our winterization ebook is free, full of hints, tips and advice and available for download here. (You are even free to pass it on to friends and family or make it available for download on your own website - but please remember that it is copyrighted and cannot be altered).

|| Walk in Retail Store Hours (Winter)

It is that time of year: We are starting to close down the ponds and displays at our retail store at 9933 South Broadway, St. Louis, Mo It takes us a few weeks to winterize the ponds, move the plants and fish, etc.... While we are getting ready for winter we will still be open

Saturdays 10:00 - 4:00

so hurry and get your winter supplies! Soon it will be time to close the store until March 1, 2003!

Of course, our online store will stay open for business all winter, everyday, all day long! Just visit Our Online Store to place your order and we will ship whatever is needed to you! Questions will still be answered via email and telephone and product will continue to ship as usual!

|| Around the Pond in Fall!

Time to clean up around the pond, also! Don't rake all the leaves away, though! Leave a few against a rock here and there, for critters such as frogs and toads to survive under during the winter months. As always: please, no fertilizer, herbicides or pesticides around the pond! These toxic substances can get washed into the pond during fall rains and poison fish as well as other critters living in the pond. Far better to use organic means to control the occasional weed or nuisance bug.

|| For Southern Water Gardeners:

* Tropical plants: if the water temperature sinks below 65 degrees for more than a few days, tropicals should be moved inside. * Hardy plants: dead foliage should be trimmed off. The crowns of the plants should be below water level if there is any chance of the top layer of water freezing. * Fish: The pond fish should be fed cool weather food if the water temperature drops below 60 degrees.

|| Fun (Pond) Fact

Baby Goldfish will survive most winters in the pond as long as they are about 1 1/2 long. Pond and Water conditions have to be optimal, of course and include: Places to hide adequate oxygen supply healthy water quality
