>*> TREE TRUNK IN THE POND - THE SEQUEL
In the last issue I mentioned that I read in a German
Water Gardening book to put a dead tree trunk in the pond
to lower the pH. I still do not know whether this works but
I have talked to various knowleadgable people about this
idea and all of them agreed it probably would not do any harm.
It was suggested not to use any softwood or pine, because
they tend to have too much sap in the wood.
An interesting tidbit was send by a reader (Ivana), citing
a Bible reference with the same suggestion:
2 Esdras 1 22-23
'The Lord Almighty says:
There in the desert by the river of bitter water
when you were thirsty and cursed me, in spite of
your insults I did not send fire upon you.
Instead, I made the water fit to drink by throwing
wood into the river.'
>*> TURN YOUR WATER HYACINTHS UPSIDE-DOWN
There are many good reasons to occasionally lift your
Water Hyacinths and checking the roots:
-- If the Hyacinths are not multiplying as quickly as they
should the fish may be eating the roots (they do consider
them dessert). Water Hyacinth roots should be at least
6 inches long by this time of year.
If that is not the case, rotate some of them into a container
of water over some compost (it is best if the roots can
touch the compost) and keep in a sunny spot for a week or
two.
-- If Water Hyacinths are not growing properly or turning
brown it is sometimes a sign of pH that is too high. Time
to test the water.
-- Water Hyacinth roots are a good place for fish eggs.
You can find them and see them easily by turning the plant
upside down (do not let them dry out - they will die off
quickly).

>*> ANSWERING QUESTIONS
We get many, many emails each day with pond questions.
To answer a great many of them we have written and made
available for FREE three e-books:
"How to Dig a Pond"
"Basic Pond Maintenance"
"Basic Pond Fish Care"
These are available to download here:
http://www.publicationsource.com/ebooks/altp/ebooks.mv
Remember: They are completely FREE (you can even give them
away from your website, send them to friends, etc...as long
as they are NOT ALTERED IN ANY WAY).
>*> OUR PICKS IN FILTRATION - EXPLAINED
We are often asked why we carry only three lines of pond
filters. The answer is simple:
We have tried many, and found these to be highly effective
for the price with a good size range to fit most ponds.
We have tried all the filters we sell (most of them are
still filtering one pond or the other either at the retail
store or at our homes), so we know they work and they do
a good job at a reasonable price.
We try just about every product we sell first to make sure
that it does what it is supposed to do!
-- BioForce advantages: Easy to hide because it can be dug
into the ground and the water will flow upward to waterfall,
spitter, creek, etc...because the filter is pressurized.
-- Fishmate advantages: Extremely easy to clean, very
reasonably priced with UV or without.
Take a look at them all here.
>*> Fun (Pond) Fact
New Energy source:
Some scientists are looking into green algae because they
produce hydrogen gas that can be used to burn without
producing pollution:
Well, at least we know that stuff CAN be used for something!
