>> CLEANING THE POND FILTER - how often, how much?
Answers to some frequently asked questions!
How often a filter needs to be cleaned depends on many
different factors! Here we look at some of them:
--- the number, size and types of fish in the pond:
More fish and/or larger fish = more waste produced.
--- adequate beneficial bacteria culture
Bacteria helps reduce waste in the pond by actively
consuming it.
--- over-feeding will cause the filter to have to
work harder. Feed no more than your fish can eat
in five minutes. Feed several times a day rather
than a large quantity at one time.
--- adequate filter size:
the larger the filter in relation to the pond, the less
often it has to be cleaned. If a filter is just barely
adequate for the gallons of water to be filtered it will
have to be cleaned more often.
--- in-the-pond filters generally require more frequent
cleaning than filters that sit outside the pond
(external filters are also easier to clean).
Filters should not be cleaned to thoroughly! They actually
filter better if they are just a little bit dirty.
Never clean the filter material with chlorinated tap water,
it will kill the beneficial bacteria that adhere to the
filter material.
