Tired of cleaning your Pond Filter?

>> SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED POND QUESTIONS:
Q: How deep should I dig my pond?
A: This question does not have a definite answer, but here
are some guidelines:
* A Water Garden (for aquatic plants only) needs to be about 18 inches
deep in most areas of the country to let hardy plants survive.
It should be a little deeper in extremely northern areas.
* A fish pond for Goldfish needs an absolute minimum of 18 inches, in
extreme northern areas 2 feet of depth.
* A Koi pond needs a minimum of 2 feet, 3 feet is better.
Q: How often should I clean my filter?
A: Again, there is no definite answer. As a matter of fact, when it
comes to filter cleaning it gets quite a bit more ambiguous, because it
depends on so many factors: fish density, organic load, quality and size
of filter, etc...
In general, there is hardly a filter out there that can go much longer
than a few days without some cleaning, it is mostly a question of how easy
it is to clean. When considering a filter, always go as big as you can
afford, the bigger the filter the less often it has to be cleaned - this does
not necessarily mean "physical" size of the filter, but design size:
A filter designed to handle up to a 500 gallon pond that is actually
filtering a 500 gallon pond will have to be cleaned more often than a
filter designed for up to 1000 gallon pond that is filtering only 500 gallons.
Also, a filter should be cleaned (temporarily) more often after using a
flocculant such as PondCare Accu Clear
or right after installing an Ultra Violet Clarifier
because it is going to be working extra hard to remove the dead
green water algae produced by these products!
Q: Do Koi and Goldfish get along?
A: Indeed they do! So well, in fact, that they will inter-breed. So, if the
bloodlines of your Koi matter to you then it is better to keep the Goldfish
out of the Koi pond!
>> THIS THING IS SOOO NIFTY!
Generally I do not dedicate a whole subject in the newsletter to rant and
rave about a product, but I am positively swept off my feet by this one:
In keeping with the discussion about pond filters above, check out the
new CAL filter! The 2000 and 4000 have true backflush capabilities!!!
Makes cleaning a SNAP! We have exchanged several of the filters at our
retail store (and, I might ad, a couple at my home, too) with this new
wonder and it makes life much easier!
It has a dedicated backflush outlet to which a garden hose can be attached,
so you can water your flowers with the (nutrient rich) backflush water.
It can be fitted with an internal UV and this fall an internal de-icer will
be available to keep an open area in the pond!
It is too cool.
>> POND PLANTS - WHICH ONES WHERE?
Aquatic plants are the crowning glory of Garden Ponds and many are
available, but some are nuisance plants in some areas of the country!
Water Hyacinths are unlawful in most southern states where they
can survive the winter and clog waterways.
Even yellow Iris are banned in some states and so are several others:
* Purple Loosestrife
* Parrots Feather
* Water Chestnut
* Water Lettuce
and the list goes on....
We strife to only sell plants that are allowed in all states, but it is
also the responsibility of individual pond owners to keep the more
aggressive plants strictly in the pond. They should never be disposed of
where they could possibly thrive outside of the confines of the lined
garden pond!
This newsletter now reaches almost 10.000 readers and our latest survey
showed that our subscribers are largely satisfied with the content.
If you have any suggestions, please send them to us, we are always
looking for ideas to make it better!
Please forward the newsletter to family and friends who may also enjoy it!
Thank You!
>> FUN (POND) FACT
You think there are way too many toad or frog eggs in your pond?
Out of every 2000 eggs only 5 make it to adulthood :(
So, baby those eggs, far too few survive!
