>>> BROWN LETTUCE, PUNY HYACINTH
In many parts of the USA the weather has been much cooler
(and wetter) than usual.
Tropical plants are having a hard time with the cold and
dark days. Umbrella Palm, Taro, Water Canna, etc... are in
many areas much smaller than they should be this time of
year.
Water Lettuce and Water Hyacinths are having an especially
difficult time. Water Lettuce will literally fall apart if
the temperatures go too low and Water Hyacinths are not
growing and multiplying at the usual rate.
Not much can be done about it. Try locating them in sheltered
areas of the pond that also receive maximum sun when it does
come out!
>>> SOME FACTS ABOUT BREEDING FISH
It is that time of year!
With any luck at all there will be baby fish!
Both Goldfish and Koi scatter their eggs. The eggs are very sticky
and will adhere to just about anything.
Both Goldfish and Koi consider the eggs a delicay and will eat
all but the best hidden ones (which is probably a good thing
or we would all end up with thousands of baby fish).
Goldfish eggs hatch by "degree days", which simply means that the
warmer the temperatures, the faster the eggs hatch.
Goldfish hatchlings are generally black and very, very small. They are
extremely difficult to see until they grow a bit. They are about the
size of mosquito larvae.
With sufficient food and good water conditions they do grow rapidly and
will start turning to the familiar gold color. Some turn gold later than
others, but usually this change starts to occur when the babies are
about 1 - 2 inches long.
Koi babies are a bit larger than Goldfish babies and the beginnings of
color and pattern can sometimes be seen pretty quickly.
Spawning season often triggers much anxiety in pond owners, because the
fish can get very aggressive. The spawning female is often chased and
pushed by the male fish mercilessly. There is not much to done about
that, nature must take its course.
When a lot of spawning is going on in a pond it can cause a sudden and
deadly ammonia/nitrite spike. Be sure to check for these chemicals more
often at that time (that goes for frog and toad spawning, too - see
the "Fun Pond Fact" below).
Test kits can be found here.

We have been very busy despite the absolutely horrible weather.
Many customers have already been by to admire our new
display pond (three waterfalls flowing into each other). We did
a lot of re-arranging and changing in the outdoor area this year.
The new back-flushable pond filter has been an absolute hit.
It is going out the door almost faster than it is coming in!
>>>FUN ( POND ) FACT
Toad tadpoles love to munch on algae. Frog tadpoles eat algae too, and
also worms, slugs and insects. Sooooo.... having thousands of frog or
toad eggs and then tadpoles is not such a bad thing!
