>>> FALL PREPARATIONS ARE IMPORTANT!

It is easy to forget about the pond in the fall, there are so many other things to do: The kids have started school and after-school activities again, the days get shorter, etc...etc...

But fall preparations can have a direct impact on how well the pond does next summer:

1) Cut down decaying plants to prevent them from decomposing in the water.

2) Clean filters and pumps and move them inside if necessary (this depends on whether you leave them running all year, whether the equipment can be left out and other factors - consult your owner's manuals).

3) Scoop out as many leaves as possible

4) Cover the pond with a net if trees are close by.

Much more detail can be found in our free e-book: "How to Winterize the Pond", but I wanted to touch on the importance of winterization in this newsletter. So much of next spring and summer's success depends on the preparations made now. A cleaner pond over-winters with much more success and starts up in the spring clearer, healthier and faster!

==> The next issue of the newsletter will have some tips on winterizing plants and will also start our "Southern Ponds" feature again for the winter.

Check out this new Pond De-Icer from Tetra:

It serves as a bird bath too!

>>> HIDE 'EM!

When the plants in the pond start dying down for the winter they leave your precious fish pitifully exposed to predators!

Hawks, Owls, etc... consider Koi and Goldfish a Gourment Dessert! Take steps to prevent them landing on the predator dinner plate, give them places to hide:

1) Take large terra cotta flower pots and put them in the bottom of the pond turned on their sides (the fish can scoot into them). Be sure the pots do not contain residue from fertilzer, etc.

2) Cover the pond with a net even if there are no large trees nearby.

2) Use two foot sections of white PVC pipe and put them on their side in the pond so the fish can hide in them.

>>> WHY FALL FOOD?

Special Food Formulations for the cooler water temperatures of fall and winter are available for the pond fish and we are asked often if it is really necessary to switch to this special food?

Here is the reason:

Koi do not have stomachs and digest all of their food with their intestines. As the water cools, the Koi's metabolism slows and with it their ability to digest food.

Fall/Winter food is formulated with more vegetable matter (which is easier to digest) than summer formulas.

It is equally important to stop feeding completely when the water temperature dips below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, because the food will no longer be digested at all and will sicken the fish if it remains in the intenstine! More Info: Our Pond Store

>>> Fun (Pond) Fact

Average live spans of frogs range from 4 - 14 years and the oldest fossils of frogs found are estimated to originate about 200 million years ago!
