|| Emergency Winter Weather Help Tips
Many of our subscribers have been hit (or are currently being
hit) with some awful weather that can be potentially devastating
to the inhabitants of the pond if there has not been time to take
precautions. We thought we'd send a quick newsletter with some
helpful information to help your ponds get through these storms
as best they can:
1) Fish (and hibernating frogs) must have a hole in the ice so
poisenous gases (carbon monoxide) can escape and oxygen can enter.
2) Never, ever beat on the ice to open a hole. If a de-icer was
not installed prior to it freezing, use a pot of hot water and
set it on the ice so it can melt through (be extremely careful
carrying hot water - do NOT make it so scalding that you could
burn yourself). You may have to re-fill the pot several times if
the ice is very thick.
3) Koi should have an air pump to ensure they have adequate
oxygen due to their size.
4) Very deep ponds can stratify and sudden warm days can cause
the water to suddenly "flip" (warmer layers from the top falling
to the bottom). This is VERY detrimental to Koi, they cannot
take sudden temperature changes. An air pump or a slow bubbling
pump near the bottom can help mix the water enough to avoid this
calamity.

Merry Christmas to All!
|| Last Minute Gift Ideas
We had a conversation in our office yesterday and come to the
conclusion that none of us are anywhere near finished with
Christmas shopping (some, like me, have hardly started).
Oh MY! And Christmas Eve is in 9 days!!
We brainstormed and came up with many good ideas of stuff to
buy right here in our retail store and warehouse that would make
wonderful Christmas presents:
UV Lights (for those who suffer through green ponds each year),
Pond Lights to spruce things up and add atmosphere, the new
"Ponds in a Box" (pre-formed hard shell ponds) for those who
would like a pond and do not yet have one, and of course
Gift Certificates.
Browse around with us and see what wonderful stuff you can find:
But REMEMBER: Only 9 days left---time to hurry to allow for
shipping!
|| Fun (Pond) Fact:
Your pond fish will "huddle" near the bottom of the pond
during the winter months in cold climates, because that is
where the warmer water is. Occasionally you may see them sunning
themselves near the top on warm and sunny days.
