|| First Tips for Spring in Ponds
Many of us cannot wait for Spring and for our Garden Ponds
to "spring" back to life, however many areas are still pretty
cold!
Is there anything we can do now?
Well, depending on temperatures in your area, we can start
a bit of clean-up once water temperatures rise above 42-45
degrees Fahrenheit. Using skimmer nets or pond vacs to fish
out decomposing leaves will improve oxygen availability and
cut down on "bad" bacteria.
Sludge eating bacteria can be added once water temperatures
rise above 48 degrees Fahrenheit.
Our online store (as well as our brand new retail store) are
well stocked with bacteria, pond vacs of all kinds,
start-up kits. Check the following departments at

|| Pond Fish in Spring
Winter in the cold areas of the country tends to be difficult
for our wet pets! It is a long period of fasting which is
punctuated by fluctuating temperatures in the garden pond.
Koi, especially, are very sensitive to fluctuating temperatures.
In addition, colder temperatures wipe out most beneficial
bacteria and ice cover reduces available oxygen.
What can we do to help our pond fish to emerge from this stress
as healthy as possible?
Test the water to make sure nitrite levels are at 0.
Pick up dead leaves around the pond to prevent them from being
blown into the pond and adding to the biological load by
decomposing in it.
Begin removing dead leaves and sludge from the pond bottom.

I was going to talk a bit about the revolutionary new pond

issue. Will try again in the next one. In the meantime take
