Fish kill suggestions

Question:

we have a spring fed pond in our development (has drain overflow at surface of other end that flows into stream). it is oval shaped ad about 1/3 acre. not sure of exact depth but think 6-8 ft at deepest. Not sure of exact age of pond but development was built in 1991 so probably 16 yrs or so. the pond has typical vegetation around it (rushes, etc). we recently had a massive fishkill. Having trouble uploading pictures but we lost 13 large fish (i believe they are grass carp and were about 25 lbs a piece and a couple feet long). we also lost several catfish and a great deal of small fish (not sure what they were but a couple inches in length). There is no fountain or aerator. Was hoping you could give us some help on what we should do next, e.g. get aerator, have water tested, restock, etc. thanks.

Answer:

Hello Steve.
Sorry to hear about your fish kill. My first guess is that the fish ran out of oxygen. When many fish dye around the same period of time or in the same day, it usually stems from either a toxin or lack of air. The toxin could be an over use of algaecide, pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, or things of that nature.

I would definitely recommend an aerator. Over the years, we have gotten away from every brand except Kasco Marine. They seem to hold up and keep customers happy for many years after the sale. They start off at around $1500. If you are interested, I can have a rep get you sales info, specs, etc.

Let me know! Thanks for contacting us.
