Freeze over effect on fish

Question:

in march i lost 4koi and 1 shubumpkin was cleaning leaves out then we had a freeze did i hurt them by cleaning too early

Answer:

More than likely cleaning your pond a little early was not the direct cause of the death of your pond fish. You might have stirred up the water a bit but as long as there was proper aeration your pond fish should have been fine.
With the freeze if your pond froze over completely then toxic gases from fish waste and other decaying organic debris would have been trapped and this could have also of killed your pond fish.
More than likely there wasn’t enough dissolved oxygen in the water for your pond fish to survive.
