Koi wound help

Hi I have a koi who has a wound approx. 1 x 3 inch in size and it looks cotton. I live in New Jersey where the temp is approx. 40 degrees. Is there anything I can do? If so What? I would greatly appreciate a prompt response, as the fish has had this wound for some time.
