Pond Filter Size

Question:

I have a 1200 gallon pond. I also have a bog set up (1/2 whiskey barrel) filled with red bricks, pea gravel, and sand. I was wondering if that’s enough to keep the pond clean during the spring and summer. Thanks! Janice

Answer:

I am afraid the whiskey barrel will not be enough to filter your pond (especially if there are fish in it). The general rule of thumb is that a bog filter has to have a minimum of 10% of the surface area of the pond. It should also contain plants that are very good at filtering water (Water Hyacinths, Louisiana Iris, etc). In hot climates and/or ponds with Koi even that may not be enough and additional filtration has to be provided.
