Pond leak tips

Question:

We have a pond that was constructed with the really large rocks with gravel on the bottom. My problem is that I my water level drops really frequently and I am afraid that I have a leak. How in the world do I go about finding a leak in such a large pond. We have 1980 gallons with waterfall. I know that I am probably making my fish sick adding water so frequently.

Answer:

There are a few tips for finding a leak in a pond: a) turn off all water features (waterfall, fountains, etc)…if the leak stops it is somewhere in the water feature or hoses/tubing connected with it. b) If it does not stop, then let the pond drain/leak until it stops to determine at which level the leak is. Then examine the liner along the edge at that level. Keeping your fish safe while adding water frequently is easy if you make sure that the water is added slowly to mitigate temperature changes and add a good water conditioner.
